Meet the Degitz-Fries Family
Scott grew up Methodist and Brian grew up Catholic. When Scott and his kids lived on Sandy Oak Drive (the street attached to the church by the garage/stable), he and Austin were outside playing one day in 1999 (Austin was 3) when Austin said “Dad, why don’t we just go to that church. It’s right here? Why do we drive so far to church.” Scott said “Good question bud. Maybe we’ll try it next Sunday.” Scott says “We attended the Contemporary Service that Sunday and have been at CCC every since. CCC offered a place where we could be more than ‘1 hour Christians.’ It offered a place to learn, to grow, to serve. It offered a place where my kids could ask the tough faith questions and not be ashamed, but be offered real opportunities for discussion, growth, and therefore a deeper faith.
When Scott came out as gay, CCC offered an extended arm of fellowship, love and acceptance. When Scott met his future husband Brian, Brian didn’t currently attend church. But after visiting with Scott a few times, Brian realized that CCC was different. CCC accepted him, loved him, and loved Brian and Scott being together. Over time, Brian became a CCC member too. Brian and Scott say “CCC has been a place that has supported all 5 of us through good times and through very bad times. The church has always been a rock that held us up. We love our Community here and are so thankful for this church, and for that innocent and incredibly thoughtful question from 3 year old Austin…”why don’t we just go to that church.”
